When is it Best to Travel as a Solo Skier or Snowboarder?

Travelling as a solo skier offers you flexibility, but there are specific times that can be more advantageous for solo travel in terms of cost, crowd levels, and social opportunities. Here's a breakdown of when it's best to travel as a solo skier:

Early or Late Season (December and Early January or April): Travelling during these shoulder seasons can offer several advantages such as lower costs and smaller crowds.  Prices for accommodation, lift passes and equipment rental may be more affordable during these periods and ski resorts tend to be less crowded, which means shorter lift lines and more open slopes.

Midweek Stays: Ski resorts are typically busier on weekends and holidays. If you have the flexibility to travel during the week, you can enjoy quieter slopes, shorter lines, and potentially lower costs.

Avoid School Holidays: Be mindful of school holidays and holiday periods as resorts can be crowded with families. It's often more enjoyable for solo skiers to travel when these periods are over. Avoid the month of February if possible.

Special Event Periods: Many ski resorts host special events and festivals. These can be excellent times for solo travellers to visit, as they often come with a lively atmosphere and various activities.  Les Houches is the proud host of the Kandahar Alpine Ski World Cup in February, bringing a vibrant and exciting atmosphere to the resort.

Early morning skiing: Being the first on the slopes is key to making the most of your ski holiday.  Not only is this the best time to have pristine ski slopes and untouched powder, but often the slopes are quieter before the crowds, families and children get to make their way up to the slopes.

Remember, the "best" time to travel as a solo skier ultimately depends on your personal preferences. Some people enjoy the buzz of peak season with lots of people, while others prefer the solitude and lower costs of the shoulder season. Consider your skiing ability, social preferences, and budget when deciding on the best time for your solo ski adventure.

The best time to travel as a solo skier to Chamonix, Serre Chevalier, or Cervinia is influenced by factors like snow conditions, budget, weather, crowd levels, and personal preferences.

Here's a breakdown for each of our top destinations:

Chamonix

Chamonix Winter Season: The main skiing season in Chamonix typically runs from early December to early May.

Best Times to Travel as a Solo Skier:

  • Mid December:  This is a great time of year in Chamonix  - with plenty of opportunity to explore the first snowfalls of the year on our Ski Safari week.

  • Mid January: This period often offers a good balance between favourable snow conditions and relatively less crowded slopes compared to the peak holiday season.

  • Early Feb: Often some of the best snow conditions but just before the busy times of mid February when the school holidays start. The French school holidays run throughout the month of February.

  • Feb: February is always busy in resort, but this creates an electric atmosphere in town with amazing events, live music, lively apres-ski scene and plenty going on around the resort and on the slopes.

  • Early March: Early March can also be a great time for solo skiing and often the most popular to travel. You'll enjoy amazing snow conditions and the chance to socialise with other travellers.

  • Late Season (Late March to Early April): For those who prefer milder weather and spring skiing conditions, this is the best time to travel. The slopes may be less crowded and with the good snow base that’s built up all winter this can provide some of the best skiing all season especially with the good end of season snowfalls we have seen the past few year

  • April: We have noticed over the past few years that some of the best snow conditions have been in late April.  With warmer conditions and big snowfalls you do have to be up early to get the best powdery conditions but this allows for great skiing in the morning and a good but of relaxing in the sunshine in the afternoons either up the slopes, in town enjoying apres-ski or in the Chamonix spa or chalet hot tub!  Enjoy the slopes and top up your tan at the same time!

  • Late January to Early February: Snow conditions are typically excellent, and it's less crowded compared to the holiday season, which is very busy in the middle of February.

  • March to Early April: This is a great time to travel to Serre Chevalier. It offers reliable snow conditions with a good snow base from the season snowfall, quieter slopes after the school holidays and amazing north facing ski slopes and tree runs which hold the snow well and offer great skiing late into the season.  Serre Chevalier has its own microclimate and offers great skiing throughout March and April.
